I enjoyed reading the various comments about Bob Helm.
Bob used to come up to weekly jam sessions at my home in Santa Rosa (89/90). Shortly thereafter I moved back to Hawaii and never had a chance to see him again. He was a great guy.

The last time I saw Bob Helm, was, believe or not, at The Punjab Pizza Parlour in El Sobrante Ca.
I think Bob was in the category of players who enjoyed playing, no matter what the venue.
I was somewhat stunned to see such an icon playing in a pizza parlour that wasn't even run by Italians, but the reward outweighed the surroundings. His smile and stage manner told everyone that enjoyed what he was doing, and knew exactly what he was doing.
Bob was, IMHO, a genius like Pee Wee and Louis. Even his bad notes sounded good.
There has been much discussion about the difference between "playing an instrument" and being a musician. Bob was a musician, pure and simple.
Respectfully,
Art Wood
PS I did not order the lamb kabob pizza.
