Good info, Bruce. I didn't get most of this in Cleveland, Ohio, but I was in
college in the East from 55 on and in NYC from 60 on and got to Nick's and
Condon's and other joints. Since many of the postings on this list seem to
be anecdotes or remembrances, may I share the following that was recalled by
your remarks . . .
::snip::

For many years, Phil Schaap has been broadcasting all kinds of jazz on
various NYC radio stations. Phil plays swing, modern and way-out modern
jazz, but he also plays loads of old style jazz. For years he has produced a
marathon Louis Armstrong Festival on and around the 4th of July each year.
Typically, he plays everything Louis has ever recorded. That includes
commercial recordings, out-takes, commercials, movie clips etc.
[Tom Duncan] Had a July 4 parade gig in Montclair 2 years ago and phoned
Phil and caught him mid-broadcast and between monologues. I was on my way to
an afternoon gig and said that the trumpet sub in our band was a "kid" (my
son's age) who was a shur-nuf working musician and had just returned from 3
weeks in Reno with a Ray Charles themed review. I ran over the few tunes we
needed for the parade with him and Freddy did a great job and enjoyed his
morning. I enjoyed the warm-up. He had done a few long tones and whatever
else and then joined us on the flatbed truck. I mentioned that he might
enjoy listening to the Schaap broadcast later that day and he said, "Ah,
Louis Armstrong!!" . . . and launched into the intro of West End Blues. The
rest of us joined in and he continued, I took the clarinet solo and he took
it out on the high note chorus. . . . "Hell of a warm-up tune, Freddy", I
said and it was.

Moral of the story is that some of these kids can play OKOM and have an
appreciation for it, but they do studio and other work to make a living.
Freddie (Hendrix) had a good teacher (Dave Brown . . . plays with Vince
Giordano and the Nighthawks for years and other NYC gigs) who encouraged him
to listen to Armstrong to be a better trumpet player and he learned well.

Regards,

Tom Duncan
