Try Mighty Aphrodite from western US and Canada. Bria Skonberg, co-leader and trumpet and vocals is scheduled for Bickford Theatre in Morristown, NJ in January (see New Jersey Jazz Society on the web). Also noteworthy, Claire McKenna, co-leader, clarinet, vocals. These are young gals, Claire a recent college grad. The band played both Monterey and Sacramento this year. As for yung-uns, I guess everyone knows about Jonathon Russell, 11 or 12, who fiddles at every festival that can get him (CT this summer). Dan

Wow! How nice to hear of the young folks you mention. Seems as if I inadvertently started something here. And am I glad that I did. No doubt we'll hear of lots more.
As for Media People getting on this particular bandwagon: FAT CHANCE! Which ironically is the same as Slim Chance. There are some media people who champion such things, but they, as with us, are few in number.
I'm also pleased to hear of female jazz players. Again, there are many, but only a small percentage. There's a whole new subject-line we can delve into. Female pianists, yes (and string players) but as for horns - not too many.

Defying that concept, are quite a few ladies who belt it out. There's a marvelous all-female band, called Diva. Their leader is a drummer (Sherry Maracle), who is as good as any drummer I've ever heard. In the NYC area there are at least three, fine, string bassists of the female persuasion. One is Nicki Parrot (originally from Australia, by the way). She is formerly of Diva and also of the Les Paul group. That lady can play - and sing! Debbie Kennedy is a bassist who will give any slap-bass player, a run for his (or her) money. Last week, in Connecticut, I saw the Jim Fryer group. Jim is a talented trombone man who also plays trumpet & euphonium and he sings. His group had a wonderful bass playing lady, named Genevieve Rose.

In New York, Cynthia Sayer has been playing banjo and singing, for many years. Besides that, she plays piano, in the Woody Allen Jazz Band.

On Trombone, I know of Britta Langsjoen, who plays trombone, sweet and hot. And then there's Christine Ledane, one of the most powerful trombonists I've ever heard.

Judy Carmichael is a stride pianist who knocks 'em dead, around the world.

The list goes on and on. LET'S HEAR FROM Y'ALL.

  Henry N,
Yes, audiences have aged, as have many of the players (those who are stil alive, that is !). But isn't it great to see the young players coming on in traditional jazz and swing styles, such as
     (i) JOSH DUFFEE AND HIS ORCHESTRA in Davenport, Iowa. He's 27 now, but has been organising his Jean Goldkette re-creation orchestra (and several smaller goups) for five or six years now....using 15 or so young players (20s/30s) of high musical standard from that area. Oh that there were more like Josh, not only playing the music well, but enthusing his own age-group to actively participate ...not just listen to junk on their ipods their ipods.
(ii) SAM MILITICH AND THE CLEARWATER HOTCLUB.(Wisconsin) Now 21 years of age, virtuoso guitarist/pianist/composer Sam has already achieved an international reputation for his re-creations of Django Reinhardt guitar/violin music, which he's been doing for several years now. He even induced his father and uncle (both top musos on bass and rhythm guitar respectively) to take an interest in the Django repertoire and join his group, which is wonderful to shear in live concertperformance. Sam's several CDs are outstanding.
(iii) AARON WEINSTEIN (New York). At 19 years of age, this gifted jazz violinist's ARBORS recording backed by the Pizzarellis, Houston Person, Nicki Parrott and Joe Ascione has to be heard to be believed for one so young.
(iv) MICHAEL MCQUADE (Melbourne Australia). Still in his early 20s, Michael has already established himself around Australia as Australia's leading re-creator of 20s 30 40s hot jazz. He's been wowing jazz concert and jazz club audiences since his mid teens. He plays cornet, clarinet and all the saxophones, arranges and transcribes all his own music. He leads "The Red Hot Syncopators", a 9-piece band, plus swing groups, whose CDs are just wonderful : you'd think they were an authentic 20s/30s group of highly experienced jazz men (and women). Their lead tenor sax and their trombonist are girls in their mid 20s, playing hot driving stuff, The trombonist's sir-name by the way is "Liston", though not related to the great Melba Liston.
Now all we need is for some media people to market and promote them, and we may see their own generation taking an interest on hearing them at festivals (pie in the sky?).
Can we hear of other young up and coming players from members of this list please ?

  Hello Bruce!

Your comments are right on the money. Unfortunately, the average age of our audience is deceased. The music is still great, but it hasn't been "young peoples' music" for many years.

                                                                                                              Henry N.
