To Bill Barnes and SDRCS Historians:
Bill and I went to Duke University in the early 1950s. He formed a Dixieland
Band there. Later on, he joined the Southampton Dixie, Racing & Clambake
Society Jazz Band and was instrumental in getting me aboard in the late
1950s.
Dear Bill:
Going through my stored stuff, I found an original poster from the run that
we silk screened and put all over Duke's campus. Fair condition.
"DIXIELAND JAZZ SESSION AT THE SHRINE CLUB - Featuring The Symphonic Six.
8:00 to 11:00 PM, Wednesday, November 25 - "Refreshments Served"
The year was 1953 and the band was Bill, Me, Frank Freeman on piano, Rob a
minister's son from Saco Maine on trombone, Drummer whose name I forget and
bass whose name I forget.
Weren't those great days Bill?
Unfortunately the party was so successful that it ended our run as Joe
Hands, Football Player (End) punched several holes in the wall and the
Shriner's no longer allowed us to use their facility. Yeah, everybody drank
a little and we had an SRO audience.
So much for "art" music.
Cheers,
Steve Barbone
