Hi GJB Fans,

A Sad Note:

JD Danscuk, of WMNR FM Radio, has passed. JD was 80 years old, and for the
past 27 years he hosted a wonderful Jazz radio show on Saturday nights on WMNR
FM. He was a faithful “Galvanized” friend and supporter, and played our
recordings on his show often. He also helped to promote our performances, and
he was very supportive in promoting both the Hot Steamed and Great Connecticut
Jazz Festivals. He also attended our performances, including both Jazz
Festivals. He loved our performances at Marisa's, because it was close to his
home. I spoke with him at Marisa's last month. The Jazz world will miss JD
Danscuk, and so will I. JD leaves his wife, Joyce of 58 years, and their 4
children. Thank you JD for all you've done for Jazz. Thank you Joyce, for
donating your Saturday nights, for 27 years! For more information about JD, go
to www.wmnr.org. Be sure to listen to WMNR next Saturday, 9PM to 1PM as
WMNR General Manager Kurt Anderson pays tribute to JD once again as he did this
past Saturday.

A CD RELEASE PARTY THIS WEEK! OUR FIRST! And, it's our last public
performance for 2007! Don't miss it! There's only one table left! If you miss
that table, they'll put you on a waiting list. What a great response, thank
you!

It's Thursday, November 29th, 6:30-9PM at the Beachhead, 3 Cosey Beach Ave
East Haven. We're very excited about this because this latest Galvanized Jazz
Band CD is absolutely fabulous. We're talking about the Howard Alden-Dirck
Spicer-Noel Kaletsky GJB session on Jan 1, 1984 at the Millpond Tavern,
Northford CT., where we performed weekly from 1971-2005! It's called 'AIRMAIL
SPECIAL', and boy is it special. I get goose bumps when I listen to it! The
energy level is incredible. We'll try to re create that feeling at the CD
Release Party, playing all of the tunes from that session, so call for reservations
now, 203-469-5450. I can tell you that seating will be limited so you can be
assured of good service; we also need room for the 7-piece band! The
Beachhead is very aware that some of you didn't get the service you deserved at our
last Sunday performance, and they're going to do whatever is necessary to
correct that. One more thing, this CD will be available at the CD Release Party,
but not before, so if you order prior to that, it will be mailed to you after
the CD Release Party, if there are any left! By the way, you may want to
make your reservation earlier than 6:30 to avoid any possible delays. See you
there! Remember, we start at 6:30.

Bruce McNichols remembers Charlie Stevens:

We reported last week that our old friend Charlie Stevens, a wonderful bass
player, and a great guy too, passed away peacefully on Wed Nov 14th.

The following is from Bruce McNichols, as he remembers Charlie Stevens:

“I am deeply saddened to hear the Charlie Stevens news. Many years ago I had
the pleasure of working with Bill Lezotte's band. We did steadies at the Black
Olive and later at the Whitman (both in Farmington, Connecticut) and many
Friday nights at Bill's Seafood in Westport, Connecticut. I recall my first
time at Bill's Seafood. There were two reed players (me and Noel Kaletsky). Being
the new guy, I was very self-conscious as we were about to begin. I remember
asking Noel which one of us should play lead. He said "I dunno. Just play." I
did and it was beautiful. Two reeds can be a disaster but with Noel, it was a
pure delight. The Farmington gigs had Bill Lezotte on guitar and banjo, Bill
Sinclair (piano) and Charlie Stevens (string bass). It was one of the few
gigs where I was the only horn (soprano sax).

In my many years of playing, I've had the honor of working with some of the
very best musicians, ever! That said, I can't think of a more well oiled
machine, than that quartet. I'm a big fan of the rhythm section. I also attempt to
be somewhat sparse, in my horn playing. With that band, those guys just chugged
along and my spaces highlighted their prowess. I long ago, realized that
players with spectacular technique, are not necessarily my favorites. I'll take
a lesser technician, if he let's the music happen. I don't know if Charlie
had spectacular technique, or not (and that's how it should be). What I do know
is that he was a fine bass man and a spectacular musician! He laid down a
solid beat, with perfect intonation and very tasty notes. AND, he liked it that
way. What more could you ask for. Bill Lezotte's repertoire was (and is)
fabulous. He dug Billie Holiday and Fats Waller tunes that I had never heard - all
of them magnificent. My one regret is that I never recorded that very
special combo. A year or two ago, I got Charlie's e-mail address and we exchanged
messages. I was delighted and flattered to find that he too, cherished those
good old days.”

Bill Logozzo's Heartbeat Jazz Band will be at Olivers in Essex on Thursday,
Dec 6th, 7-10PM, with Skip Hughes ! This is a great spot, nice casual
atmosphere, and good food at a reasonable price. Of course the music is hot hot hot!
Dancing too! Look for them at Olivers usually on the first Thursday of
each month. They'll also be doing a Jazz Service at the East Hampton
Congregational Church on Sunday morning, Jan 13th. Contact Bill Logozzo at Bill

SUNDAYS at Marisa's in Trumbull!
We'll be back on Sunday, Jan 20th, 6-8:30, with guest trombonist Craig Grant!
Remember, there is no cover or minimum at Marisa's, but because the food is
fabulous, you're going to want to order dinner. There's dancing too!
Marisa's is very easy to get to: take the Merritt Parkway toward Trumbull, get off
at Exit 48, head north for about 3 miles, and it's on your right. This is a
good size restaurant, with plenty of seating and parking, and a nice dance
floor too. Marisa's address is 6540 Main Street, Trumbull, CT 06611. The
telephone number is 203-459-4225.

The Great Connecticut Traditional Jazz Festival

It's all set for July 25, 26 and 27, at the Sunrise Resort in Moodus! I
don't have all the details yet, but I heard rumors that it's going to be the best
Fest yet! Names like Jeff Barnhart Allstars, Cornet Chop Suey, Igor's Jazz
Cowboys, Blue Street, Midiri Brothers, Galvanized Jazz Band with Jane
Campedelli and JP Alessi (sax player and leader of French Preservation New Orleans
Jazz Band!), and more, much more! Call 1-800-HOTEVENT for a brochure, or to buy
your tickets in advance. It really helps. Why not buy tickets for some
lucky person for Christmas?

27, 28 and 29. We'll be there along with a host of other talented musicians for
another great weekend of traditional jazz. For more information about the
festival and to order tickets, log on to www.hotsteamedjazz.com. If you would
like to receive updates directly from The Hot Steamed Jazz Festival, send an
email to info at hotsteamedjazz.com and ask to be added to their email distribution
list. From the Director: “The holiday season is almost upon us and festival
