Hi Rick,

There was a time when I considered myself being up on all the musical activities in NYC and environs. Sorry to say, those days were long ago.

Over the years, it seems as if all, or at least most, of the Seven Nights a Week joints have folded. We lost the old-time stalwarts such as Condon's, Ryan's, Nicks, and even the lesser-known places such as the Cinderella Club and the Music Box. In semi-recent times, we've lost the Red Blazer Too and the Cajun. In those days, I could've easily recommended any of them, for any day.

On the surface, one could easily conclude that There ain't no old-time music in New York. That is not necessarily the case. Here are some thoughts:

Mondays and/or Tuesdays: Charlie O's Times Square Grill: the Stan Rubin Band, usually led by Herb Gardner hgardner47 at earthlink.net

Herb is our hot trombonist who also plays wonderful piano.

Many Wednesdays, Thursdays, Sundays etc.: Michael Arenella band. Old time music by the trumpet playing leader. michaelarenella at hotmail.com

Some of these (and those) events take place in Brooklyn which of course, if part of New York City.

Here are some good, solid bands that play old time music:

Cantonement, the Moonlighters, etc.

I can't say if they'll be performing on the desired night, but at least it might be a start.
