Joel Schiavone is a talented banjo man from Connecticut. Joel founded and operated the word-wide chain of clubs called Your Father's Mustache. That's where dozens (hundred's?) of musicians, and thousands of patrons, got their exposure to old time music.
Joel appeared with his band on several Ed Sullivan TV programs. They also appeared for the president at the White House and for many other high-profile events.
We are proud that Joel has invited us to perform with him for part of a concert series in New Haven Connecticut.
Here's Joel's take on the concert:
Our next event is June 15. 2008. Again at Chow, this time with the renowned Smith Street Society Jazz band. Smith Street consists of 3 elderly gentlemen, maybe even as old as I am, who have been playing OKOM for a combined total of 150 years. I can't understand how they have lived for such a long time playing these trifling musical bits, but they ask me the same question. In any case OKOM is the acronym for Our Kind Of Music, meaning anything written before 1955 that actually has a melody and usually has a sense of humor. They have also made representations that they have some funny things to say, but my research indicates that this is wishful thinking.
So these 3 gentlemen and yours truly will be holding forth on June 15th, playing songs you are trying to forget and having a helluva time doing it. Time is modified slightly due to summer hours, with doors opening at 7 and show starting at 7:30. Price is still $20, including something to eat which is larger than an hor d'oeurve and less than a main course.
Reservations have to be made as there are still only 60 seats. This time to me directly at joel_banjo@ hotmail.com. please also send your phone # for our list. These shows have sold out in about 14 days so get to work.
Last show for the summer, we will resume in late August or early September. Be there! Chow, 966 chapel Street, New Haven. On the New Haven Green.
